OnePlus Teases ‘Custom MEMC Chip’ For Ultra-Smooth Videos on its 120Hz Display

Earlier, company has already confirmed about the sport of 120Hz display in its next-gen OnePlus flagship, but now the company’s CEO, Pete Lau, has confirmed that the upcoming smartphone will also include a new feature which will actually make the higher refresh rate more useful for consumers. According to Pete, OnePlus has developed “a custom MEMC chip which can push ordinary 30fps video up to 120” to enable all standard videos to take full advantage of the 120Hz display in the OnePlus 8 Pro and the smartphone is expected to be launched later this year. This custom-made MEMC chip will be able to create additional frames to imitate a higher frame rate.

Typically, we have seen MEMC chips in TVs to artificially enhance frame rates of the standard videos to look extra smooth, but going by Pete’s tweet, the company is using one of those chips in its upcoming flagship smartphone. The company has also recently showed off the 120Hz display which can be expected in the upcoming OnePlus 8 Pro. Pete has shared a comparison of the 120Hz Fluid Display with the traditional 60Hz display. While to compare both the display, the footage has to compressed to 30 fps (25% speed). But it will be interesting to witness how the company will implement the new technology to make sure that it makes an actual difference for users.

Motion Estimation/ Motion Compensation or MEMC is often used in premium smart TVs to make animations more fluid by compensating for motion blur. This is done by generating intermediate animation frames using data points from the existing frames on either side. It’s one of the newest techniques to implement Motion Interpolation, which has been relatively common over the years and is also offered by several video player apps, such as WinDVD, PowerDVD and more While various software codecs, plugins and video editing tools, such as FFmpeg and Adobe After Effects also feature this.
The OnePlus 8 Pro is expected to come with a punch-hole front camera in the left of the screen along with a quad-camera setup like OnePlus 7 Pro. We are considering that it might come with some extra battery or even a wireless charging coil as it doesn't seem to feature a pop-up camera like OnePlus 7 Pro. While the wireless charging is also rumored for the OnePlus 8.

The leaked renders of the OnePlus 8 depict some minor changes in the upcoming smartphone based on the leaked renders- it has a port despite grille for the loudspeaker and the notification slider has a wavy ridge instead of criss-cross texture in the OnePlus 7 Pro. The report has also included the dimensions of OnePlus 8 as 160.2 x 72.9 x 8.1 mm, which is just less the 7 Pro’s 162.6 x 75.9 x 8.8 mm. The display is rumored to feature a 6.5-inches, suggesting that this would be a slightly smaller version, identical to the OnePlus 7 Pro in appearance, only with a hole-punch display and presumably the same 20:9 aspect ratio on its display – like the one on the 7T.
We can't confirm about the announcement of OnePlus 8 series but given the teasers are coming this early year, then it might be sooner than May.
