Prime Video To Premiere 7 Indian Movies Globally as Theaters Closed

India has been in lockdown state for about two months now to suppress the casualties due to the spread of the COVID-19. During this time, all public places including malls, shopping centers and movie theatres have remained shut down which clearly signifies that no movie will get the right to theatrical release. But Prime Video has reportedly secured right to premiere 7 Indian movies on its platform without any theatrical release.
Prime Video will be premiering the following movies:

  1. Gulabo Sitabo
  2. Shakuntala Devi
  3. Ponmagal Vandhal
  4. Penguin
  5. Law
  6. French Biryani
  7. Sufiyum Sujatayum

As this news has become public, India's two largest movie theatre chains put their extreme displeasure due to the decision of the production houses. In a statement, INOX said, “Such acts, though isolated, vitiate the atmosphere of mutual partnership and paint these content producers as fair-weather friends rather than all-weather life-long partners. Needless to say, INOX will be constrained to examine its options, and reserves all rights, including taking retributive measures, in dealing with such fair-weather friends.”
While the co-producer of Gulabo Sitabo, Ronnie Lahiri has said “We’re facing a once-in-a-lifetime phenomena, not seen since World War 2. These are the times when things change. Initially, people have apprehensions but one has to adapt. That’s how human civilizations have prospered. The minute we stop adapting, we’re done. Instead of waiting for the situation to get better, you tackle it with other alternatives.”

It seems like the movies in question will begin to stream on Prime Video from starting this month while the premieres will be spread out over the next three months.
